(FYI I am going to begin this blog, post what I have of it, and then update and add to it for the next couple of hours — so if you are interested in following our progress you might check back periodically — or not!)
If you are reading this, you are probably pretty bored. That’s ok; that’s why I’m writing it!
Cheryl, Michael & I are on our way to Oklahoma for a weekend vacation. Libby & Josh are there already and are waiting for us. We hope to do some things for Libby’s birthday as well as go to the OU game Saturday. I broke form (for us anyway) and actually drove this trip, but Cheryl has taken over now. Like a, lot of LASIK patients, my night vision has suffered a bit. But what a benefit you are now receiving from my present leisure time! 😉
We picked up Michael from school at about 12:30 — after the core of his classes were over — and headed out on I-10 West. Looking in the rearview mirror as we left Louisiana, it appeared like it was raining behind us. Seems as though it rains every time we leave. Enough to make a person wonder …
But it is not as though we missed all the rain. We have driven through several storms thus far — so we’ve definitely gotten our share of rain. We came out of a pretty severe storm in Dallas a while ago. (Thanks, you who are praying with us — we needed it!!)
We’ve seen rain in virtually every section of Texas we’ve been through today. I am glad for them; they have needed it so badly. Hope they will give thanks to the One who sent it.
We have seen some wide swings in the weather — from the 80’s and raining, to 100 degrees in Tyler (almost October?!), and then down to 70 in Dallas. I guess those wide swings led to the severity of the storm.
Gas prices are great: we filled up for $40 & $30 – hadn’t done that in a while! I guess that’s at least one boon of a bad economy …
Wait, gotta stop and sing “Oklahoma” — we are crossing the Red River! “Brand New State …” (Michael sang it with me for the first time ever — he watched the movie yesterday so he could learn the song! He did well!)
Well, what is there to share about such a trip as this! How about the cuisine? A little disappointing I am afraid. For lunch I had an overcooked, almost burnt chicken sandwich from McDonalds, half of which I threw away, and cold fries, all of which I did. Then a bit ago I had a piece of original KFC, and a meaty 5/layer burrito from Taco Bell (don’t you love those two-in-one places?!) But I took one bite of the burrito and literally had to spit out. Hope our new Taco Bell in Moss Bluff does better than this. Today’s fast food fare has been a good diet plan of sorts …
The “highlight” of today may have been stopping at the scrapbook store in Tyler. (I told you this was going to be pretty lame!) As we were driving I told Cheryl I wouldn’t mind stopping at a scrapbooking store somewhere to break up the 9-10 hour trip, so she started searching on her iphone and found one in Tyler — right at halfway — perfect! Unfortunately we arrived just before closing time, and it looked like they were leaving. I pulled into the lot and Cheryl & Michael ran in to see if it was too late, and if there was anything looking at. I got out of the car and was stretching a bit, when Michael came out: “Mom said to bring her purse in!” I knew we must have hit the jackpot (or better, perhaps the store had …). When I came in, the woman at the desk exclaimed: “all the good husbands come in! You know, some just sit inthe car!”. “No!”, I mumbled (thinking of all of the times I had done that very thing!) I knew I had to stay after that. I made my way around the store, making sure to look with interest at each … “thingy” … and … “whatchacallit”! 😉
I am going to need to drive again, as Cheryl is getting sleepy. No more storms around, so we should be ok. Do pray though .. we are a little over an hour out! Oh don’t worry — I won’t leave those of you who might still be awake hanging! 🙂
Well, we made it in — LASIK-night-blind-eyes and all! I’m grateful. The last hour of driving was quiet and uneventful. In fact, before he joined Cheryl in sleepland, Michael said, “How come every time we go to Oklahoma, it seems like we pass through the middle of nowhere?” I laughed, “There’s probably a good reason for that!” (Because we ARE;)
But here we are indeed, grateful to have arrived safe and sound, I know, it was not THE most exciting day you’ve ever read about — but it was the only one I could write about today!
