Wonderful Windshield Wipers

A couple of weeks ago, Cheryl had gone to Advance Auto to get a couple of things for her car, including new wiper blades. The original blades on her car were not cleaning the windshield well, so she paid a bit extra to get what promised to be a very nice new set. As usual, one of the helpful folks at Advance put the wipers on for her for free.

But unfortunately, Cheryl was disappointed. In fact, she told me that these new ones didn’t seem to work much better than the old, worn ones. Why had she bothered to pay so much?

Then Friday, she drove us to Lake Charles to pick up a couple of things, and as it was raining, she had the windshield wipers going.   Suddenly, she exclaimed, as she saw pieces coming OFF of her new wiper blades! She couldn’t believe it! She had just bought those, and now they were already coming apart. But when we came to a stop, she began laughing – what was coming off of the blades was the plastic covering of the PACKAGING that was never taken off the blades when they were installed!

Cheryl was excited now. The new blades worked like a charm with the covers off! “It’s like getting new glasses!” she said.

I guess sometimes with “free installation”,  you get what you pay for! 🙂

Not A Word
Cheryl, commenting on the picture of one our Facebook friends, exclaimed: “She is SO pretty!”

I decided it would be most judicious for me not to say anything at this point. A few moments of silence ensued.

Then Cheryl added: “And you did very well not to say a word right there!”

Hey, I know what color Cheryl’s eyes are! 🙂

Apology Accepted?

A couple of weeks ago, I challenged our church members to memorize the Book of James. Cheryl had actually started to memorize the book some time ago, and she is well into the second chapter by now. I told her that I was recording James on my iPhone so that I could review it, and so one day this week, she decided to record the second chapter on hers.

Now, you have to understand that Cheryl is very self-conscious about public performances, and especially reading aloud, so she went back into her scrapbook room to record James 2, so that Michael & I couldn’t hear her. She closed the door, but even at that, she said she read in a very soft, careful voice. While she was reading in this almost whisper-like manner, she stumbled on one of the words. Without thinking, she instinctively said to the phone: “I’m sorry!”

“He Is An Englishman …”

While Cheryl drove Michael, Eponine & me to Wendy’s Friday night, we were talking about measurement and meters. Then Michael said, “When I write the word ‘meter’, I like to spell it ‘metre’, like they do in England.”

“Yeah”, I said, “I do the same thing with ‘theater.’ I spell it t-h-e-a-t-r-e — just ‘cause I can!”

“And I like to spell ‘armor’ with an ‘o-u-r’”, Mike added.

“I do too!” I said enthusiastically.

“You guys are weird”, Cheryl said flatly.

Check That!

Speaking of Michael and spelling, a couple of weeks ago when Libby was home, she was grading some of Michael’s essays. At one point she slipped away and said to me in a confidential voice: “I need you to tell me if he’s used this word correctly. ‘Cause I’ve never seen it before!”

I chuckled. He had!

Name That Tune …

Cheryl took me “down the garden path” one day last week to show me what she had been up to. “Look”, she said, “I’ve planted …”

“Parsley …”

“Sage …”

“Rosemary …”

“And Blackeyed Suzans!”

“Blackeyed Suzans?” I exclaimed, “THAT’s not how that song goes!”

But don’t they still make for a pretty garden path in … “Paradise”?!

The stories from your family are always so funny! No wonder my parents loved spending time with you and Cheryl! I only mean this in the best of ways because it’s one of my favorite shows, but sometimes Cheryl reminds me of Lucy! 🙂

Ha! Ashley, you don’t have to be reticent about using the “Lucy” tag with Cheryl. We used to talk about how she and your mom were like Lucy & Ethel — so you hit it right on the nose!
Glad to see you have such a sweet family — the Lord has really blessed you! Thanks for writing!
