Proverbs 19:24 gives us a grotesque picture: “The sluggard buries his hand in the dish, but will not even bring it back to his mouth.” It is a disgusting thought indeed — but it may hit closer to home than you might think!
As in many Proverbs, this verse gives not only a specific picture, but also conveys a larger general principle. The principle here is that the person described has much on hand with which to bless and help himself – but he lacks even the basic will to reach out and take what is right there before him: he “buries his hand in the dish, but will not even bring it back to his mouth”!
This applies to many others than just a man who lazy in his eating! The application hits each of us who have blessings right before us, which for some reason we are not willing to apply the least bit of will to reach out and take:
The medicine is there; take it!
The solution is there: apply it!
The counselor is there: go to him!
The budget is there: subscribe to it!
God’s word is at hand: read it!
The job is there: go and do it!
If the answer for a problem in some area of your life is right there before you, but for some reason you refuse to do what it takes to accept it, you need only look to Proverbs 19:24 for an idea of what you look like spiritually. And it is not a very pretty picture!
