The Business of Heaven

Psalm 84:4 says: “How blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they are ever praising You.”
— Here we see that Psalmist’s envy of those who get to take care of the temple of God. He imagines how blessed they must be, to always be near His presence, and be praising Him. (I smile when I think of how some people today imagine similarly how neat it would be to work at the church – often times it actually is!)

— But this is also a picture the house of God in heaven: those who dwell there ARE always praising Him. This is the business of heaven. Some people write of how we will have “something to do” in heaven; we will “serve” God. In a sense they are right; but that “something to do” is worship. The “service” we do will involve endlessly praising Him in glory.
— But this is not only a vision of a far-off future. We are to make this our chief business here and now as well. We should make it our goal even now to be ever praising Him. God dwells in those who are followers of Jesus Christ, through His Holy Spirit. As I Corinthians 6 teaches us, we ARE the temple! We do not have to look with envy on anyone who has close proximity to the temple, or who serves there – or even wait for heaven to engage in that business (although of course it will be more glorious there). Since we have been reconciled to God through Jesus Christ, and He dwells in us, we can fulfill this Psalm, and be ever praising Him right now. If we but will, we can participate in the business of heaven NOW!
