Your Spiritual Diet

Many of us make resolutions about our physical diet as a new year begins, but what about your spiritual diet? I Timothy 4:6-7 contains quite a contrast: :6 adjures us to be “constantly nourished on the words of the faith and the sound doctrine which you have been following”, but :7 says we should avoid “worldly fables fit only for old women”. Scripture says it is “the words of the faith” and “sound doctrine” which are to feed us spiritually, NOT “worldly fables.”
We have a whole “cafeteria” of choices available for our spiritual nourishment today. One can choose fare from all kinds of books, blogs, podcasts and other media. But like a customer in a cafeteria line, we need to be careful about our choices. Make sure that the substance of your spiritual diet is healthy and sound. Do NOT nourish yourself on things which are not based on the word of God. There is a lot of “spiritual junk food” available these days: “pop religiosity” which sounds good or feels good but has no basis in the word of God. Determine that you are going to make “healthy choices” spiritually. Nourish yourself on the word of God, NOT other people’s dreams, personal experiences, stories and ideas. These may or may not be valid. But we KNOW that “all scripture is inspired by God.” (II Timothy 3:16) Let’s make sure that we nourish ourselves on that inspired word. If you are starting a new diet this year for your health, that is wonderful. But make sure you ask yourself: What will my SPIRITUAL diet consist of this year?
