A Doer’s Prayer

In Psalm 119:34 the writer prays: “Give me understanding, that I may KEEP Your Law”! The understanding of God’s word that we are to seek is not merely for intellectual enlightenment or academic achievement.

We are to seek understanding of scripture that we may DO what we find there. Jesus said in John 13:17, “If you know these things, you are blessed if you DO them”! Similarly, James commanded us to be “doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves.” (James 1:22) If you think that by reading God’s word today, and “learning” facts, that you are pleasing Him, you are deluding yourself. The crucial question as you hear from God in His word today is: what are you going to DO differently as a result? As you read the Bible today, pray like the Psalmist did: “Give me understanding, that I may KEEP Your Law.”
