Psalm 119:38 says: “Establish Your word to Your servant, as that which produces reverence for You”
The “fear of the Lord” is one of the most important qualities we can possess. Scripture tells us that it is the beginning of wisdom, and produces purity, and all kinds of other benefits for us. It is not a “craven fear”, but a respect for the presence of God, and a sense of accountability to Him. How do we cultivate this in our lives?
This verse gives us the answer. It says: “Your WORD … produces reverence for You.” If you want to grow in a healthy “fear of the Lord”, then place yourself under the ministry of God’s word: let His word speak to you through the public reading and exhortation of corporate worship services. And spend plenty of time every day in God’s word personally as well: read it, study it, and memorize it. Make the same request of God’s Spirit that the Psalmist did here: “Establish Your word to Your servant, as that which produces reverence for You.”
