The Christian Blessing

It is significant that the Christian greeting which the Apostle Paul employs in II Timothy 1:2 is “grace, mercy and peace”. It is NOT “justice, reward, and fear” — and of course we should be most thankful for that! None of us should desire what we “deserve” from God. Anyone who asks God for “justice” for himself has not thought it through. Romans 3:23 says “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” None of us are righteous, that chapter says, and each of us deserves His wrath. Thus we had better not ask for justice; we need to cry for mercy. And this verse tells us that is exactly what we will find from Him: When we admit that we have sinned, and do not want what we deserve, but call upon God to have mercy on us through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross for us, we do indeed find His “Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.” This is a blessing worth claiming for ourselves, and worth sharing with others as Paul does here!
