The Comfort of His Love

In Psalm 119:76 the Psalmist prays: “O may Your lovingkindness comfort me.” The word “lovingkindness” here is the Hebrew word “chesed”, the gracious, merciful, steadfast, unchanging, faithful love of God. Here the Bible teaches us that it is in God’s chesed that we are find our comfort.

A common problem even among God’s people is that we habitually turn to other places for our comfort. Instead of to God’s lovingkindness, we turn to:
— “comfort foods”
— drink or drugs
— television or mindless entertainment
— the wrong people — and many other directions for comfort.
When we do, we inevitably suffer consequences: becoming overweight, addicted to alcohol or drugs, wasting time on mindless things, abusive or immoral relationships — as well as missing the comfort and blessing God intended us to receive from Him.

Instead, we should learn in our times of need to purposefully turn to God for our comfort. There are no harmful side-effects with Him, and He is a sure source of comfort for all who will turn to Him. The old Scottish pastor Samuel Rutherford encouraged his flock: “His love hath neither brim nor bottom.” Let us then drink from that cup that “hath neither brim nor bottom” and let His lovingkindness comfort us!
