Unfolding His Word

In Psalm 119:130 the writer proclaims: “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple.” Barnes writes of this word, “unfolding”: “The Hebrew word – פתח pethach – means an “opening” or “entrance” – as of a gate, Joshua 20:4; Judges 9:35″. When we open up, and enter into the exposition of God’s word, it gives light and understanding. This is a good reminder in several situations:

— How can we touch the lost? Through the word of God. “The unfolding of Your words gives light” to them. Unfortunately it seems that most of us – at least in practice – have lost our confidence in the ability of the word of God to give light to the lost. We seem to rely more upon attractions, and gimmicks and “creativity” than we do God’s word. Yet the Bible says it is HIS WORD that gives light to the lost! His Spirit will take His word and give light to their dark heart! Most Christians would assert that they believe that, but we need to live and practice like we do.

— How can we grow as Christians? How can we gain the light and direction we need? How can you rekindle the fire that has grown dim in your heart? Turn to His word, and you will find that “the unfolding of Your words gives light.” As you study His word, and unpack its meaning, you will find that the unfolding of His words will give you the light you need.

— This also speaks somewhat to the process of seeking God. How do we do it? “Unfold” His word — study it. Whenever we start “unpacking” a verse or passage of scripture, it reveals so much. But we have to take the time and make the effort to “unpack” it. The consistent time and work that we put into the study of God’s word is an act of faith on our part, to believe that it will be worth it; that “the unfolding of Your words gives light.”
