In Psalm 144:3, David exclaims: “O LORD, what is man, that You take knowledge of Him? Or the son of man, that You think of him?” Here he exhibits the humble attitude that should characterize each of our lives: WONDER that the infinite, holy God who created the universe would take thought of us! Yet I am afraid that many of us today do not see the “wonder” in this assertion, but rather take it for granted.
In our self-centered, modern mindset, our attitude is more often, ” Of COURSE He thinks about us!” We are the focus of our own ego-centric lives, and it comes as no surprise to us that God would care greatly for us! Rather than any more doses of “self-esteem”, what many Americans need today is to to rediscover a realistic, scriptural sense of their position: wonderfully made by God, yes. But also infinitely minuscule in comparison to Him, and absolutely unworthy morally and spiritually of His love and attention. We need to regain a Biblical mindset, which will then allow us to recapture the resultant wonder that God Almighty so graciously lends thought to us!
