Psalm 8:3 says, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers; the moon and the stars which You have ordained …”. Notice all the YOU’s here, which refer to God: “YOUR heavens … work of YOUR fingers … moon and stars which YOU have ordained …”. These teach us much about creation, and who it belongs to:
— The last phrase says that God ordained the heavens. “Ordained” is a Hebrew word which means to “set up; establish” — the way that men found or establish a city. God ordained and planned the heavens. They are HIS idea. HE founded them!
— Not only did He found them, :4 tells us that He MADE them. They are “the work of (His) fingers.
— Because He founded and made them, they are HIS. The wording of the Psalm indicates that. It calls them “YOUR heavens”. This is just what we see elsewhere in scripture. Psalm 89:11 says, “The heavens are Yours; the earth also is Yours; the world and all it contains, You have founded them.”
God planned and ordained the heavens; He made them with His fingers, and they could not be more His. Thus when we look at the stars of the sky — and indeed anything in all creation — we can confidently say together with the old hymn: “This is my Father’s world”!
