Consecration Before Revelation

In Exodus 19:10, the Lord told Moses: “Go to the people and consecrate them today and tomorrow … and let them be ready for the third day, for on the third day the Lord will come down on Mount Sinai …”. It should be instructive to us that God did not immediately reveal Himself to the people of Israel; He had them consecrate themselves — make themselves holy — for two days first, and then on the 3rd day His revelation would come.

Surely there is a lesson for us here too: the word you may be seeking for from God will not necessarily come immediately, but you may need to spend some time consecrating yourself first. Find areas of your life in which you have been tolerating sin, or in which you have “gone back” on some commitments to the Lord, and make them right. Like the people of Israel, consecrate yourself “today and tomorrow” — or for as long as it takes — and see if God does not give you the word you are looking for soon afterwards!
