Theology 101

Psalm 119:68 contains what we might describe as “Theology 101” — a basic understanding of God: “You are good and do good.”
This verse reminds us that the basic nature of God is good; and everything that He does is good.

Psalm 100:5 says “For Yahweh is good.” Theoretically, He could have been a god who was all-powerful, and who was to be obeyed, whether or not He was good, and whether what He commanded was good or evil. But we can praise Him because not only is He sovereign, omnipotent God; He is also a GOOD sovereign, omnipotent God. As a result, we can trust His plans and purposes, even when they seem disappointing or harmful at first glance. Romans 8:28 famously re-emphasizes that: He “causes all things to work together for good to those who love Him …”. God IS good, and DOES good. This is “Theology 101” as we seek to understand God. Even a child can learn and quote this verse — and in fact it would make a good memory verse for ANY of us: “You ARE good, and DO good”!
