He Who Loves Pleasure

Proverbs 21:17 says: “He who loves pleasure will become a poor man, and he who loves oil and wine will not become rich.” There is an obvious meaning in this proverb: that the person who spends a lot on luxuries like oil & wine will not be saving money, so he will not accumulate wealth.
But I think there is another angle of interpretation in that first phrase: “He who loves pleasure will not become rich.”

It takes hard work, and sacrifice, to do the things which lead to prosperity. If you “love pleasure” – and thus only do what “feels good” to you at any given time – then you will not do those difficult things which tend to bring success. You are going to have to decide that you are doing to do things when they are difficult, and when you don’t “feel like it”, if you are ultimately going to succeed. This is true in just about every sphere of life.

Is there something difficult before you today – something hard, sacrificial, and grueling, required of you? Don’t put it off, or neglect it because it hard. You will never succeed if you do, for “He who loves pleasure will become a poor man.”

Steve, I appreciate you letting me know; I am on medical leave from “active ministry” right now, and it means a lot to hear that the Lord is using these posts, as this is one of my primary ministries right now. Thanks so much!
