Psalm 1:3 says: “He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers.” The “He” in :3 refers to the man whom :1-2 describes, who does not walk in the ways of the wicked, but who instead delights in the Law of The Lord. This verse promises some great things for this man, but the results are not his responsibility — nor ours.
The challenge for us is to BE the kind of man this verse describes: to “plant yourself firmly by streams of water” – by putting yourself in the constant nourishment of the word of God, and by delighting in His word, as :2 indicates.
Then it is GOD’S responsibility to produce the results this verse promises: to give you fruit, to make your leaf not wither, and to prosper you in everything you put your hand to. You can’t control those things; only God can do them for you. Your focus should instead be on what you CAN do: planting yourself in the word of God. Devote yourself to doing your part — and you can know that God will certainly do His!
