In Psalm 119:98, the Psalmist was overjoyed with the word of God, exclaiming: “Oh how I love Your Law; it is my meditation all the day.” We saw here how this “meditation” is not merely a “discipline”, but a heartfelt delight in scripture. Verses 98-100 of Psalm 119 go on to describe the amazing BENEFITS of meditating on God’s word:
“Your commandments make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me.”
“I have more insight than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation.”
“I understand more than the aged, because I have observed Your precepts.”
The benefits the Psalmist describes of delighting in God’s word are incomparable:
— it will make you wiser than your enemies
— it will give you more insight than your teachers
— it will help you understand more than the aged
But notice also the progression in the depth of his commitment to the word of God that is necessary to brings these things about:
— “they are ever with me” — this means he has memorized scripture, so that it is with him at all times. Again this is not “merely” a discipline, but an expression of delight, for one memorizes what he delights in, the way a young sports fan memorizes all of his favorite players’ batting averages, etc.
— “my meditation” — as we saw previously, the meditation on the word which is described here is an expression of delight. You constantly think about whatever you really delight in.
— “I have observed Your precepts” — the DOING of God’s word is vital! If you don’t DO what you read and memorize in God’s word, it shows that you are not serious about Him; it is just some kind of religious “game” for you, which God will not bless.
But if you will express a genuine delight in God by continually thinking about, memorizing, and applying His word, then the scripture indicates here that God will bless you with some incomparable benefits!
There is nothing like delighting ones self in the Lord. Such promise we have when we do just that
Amen, Desiray!
