In Psalm 8:4, David marvels at the attentiveness of God to man, asking: “What is man, that You take thought of him, or the son of man, that You attend him?” The gravity of his statement is increased when one realizes that the Hebrew for “man” the first time in the verse is “enosh”, which means “all human beings, man, mankind”. So it is not just that we should marvel that God would pay attention to any one individual among us, but that He would do so for all of mankind together! This is a significant distinction!
Unfortunately, this kind of amazement at the attentiveness of God is foreign to our modern sensitivities.
Most of us are, unfortunately, very egocentric — that is, we think the universe revolves around US. In our eyes, our own problems are the most important and the most pressing, and very deserving of the Almighty’s full attention. For many of us, the question we are amazed at is not “Why would God pay attention to me”, but rather: “Why has He forgotten me? Why isn’t He addressing my needs right now?”
It is an indication of how self-centered we are that we think that the Creator of the Universe should indeed have our little needs on His front burner! The amazement David displayed for why God should pay any attention to him is, sadly, one with which most of us are entirely too unfamiliar!
