I Kings 18 tells the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. In :21 Elijah speaks to the people of Israel and says: “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If YHWH is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” The NASB tells us that “hesitate” is literally “limp on the two divided opinions.”
You don’t make much progress in any direction when you can’t really decide what it is you want. There are times in life when you have to make a decisive choice. God demands that we make one regarding Him. Like with Israel, who did not want to choose between Yahweh and Baal, God will not allow us to “sit on the fence.” He demands a choice. If we will not make it, he will often orchestrate circumstances so that we must make one.
Have you been “limping on two divided opinions” regarding God and something else? Do you go back and forth about whether you will live for God and money, or put God or some other person first in your life? Or whether it is more important for you to have the approval of God or people regarding something? God’s word to you and I is the same as it was in the days of Elijah: “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If Yahweh is God, follow Him”!
