As many of us head off to our church worship services today, we would do well to remember the way that Psalm 30 ends: “That my soul may sing praise to Thee and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks to Thee forever.”
Psalm 30 is perhaps best-known for :5, where it says that “weeping may last for the night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.” This theme is repeated at the end, where :11 says “Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing.”
But notice what :12 says about God’s rescue. WHY does He do it? “THAT my soul may sing praise to Thee, and not be silent.” This verse tells us that the reason God gives us these deliverances is so that we will praise Him for what He has done — specifically, that we should “sing … and not be silent”!
So, in light of this, banish the thought that we should go to our worship services today and fail to sing, or sing only in a perfunctory manner. In light of all that God has done for us, let us offer praise to Him today with the passionate commitment of David. Let us resolve to do nothing less today than “sing praise to Thee — and NOT be silent”!
