Sing to the Lord

Exodus 15:1 says that after the children of Israel passed through the Red Sea and the Egyptians were drowned: “Then Moses and the sons of Israel sang this song to the Lord …”.

Notice that the RECIPIENT of their song was THE LORD. They were not singing to or for themselves, but to and for GOD. HE was the audience; HE was the One they were singing to! We need to realize that the same thing is to be true with our worship songs today. We are not singing merely for our own pleasure or enjoyment. We are to sing them “to the Lord.” I believe it would radically change our worship services if each participant would recognize and apply this. And what a sweet addition it would make to the personal prayer times of many of us if we would do what this Psalm says, and sing “to the LORD”!

Notice also that the song was a RESPONSE to the deliverance that God had just given them as they passed through the Red Sea: “THEN Moses and the sons of Israel sang …”. Because God had saved them from the Egyptians, they responded with this song of worship to Him. In the same way, our worship songs today should be in response to the salvation God gave us through the death of Jesus on the cross for us. Has God saved you? If He has, then you should respond to His salvation by beginning each day with a song to your Savior — and continue it throughout the day. If you haven’t done it already, why don’t you stop right now and sing a song of worship “to the Lord”!

We were talking about this very thing yesterday morning at Morningstar Baptist Church regarding Jonah and God’s salvation. Jonah, too, responded to God’s salvation with a song of thanksgiving that recounted the deliverance of the Lord. The model laid out before us from Scripture is that God’s people respond to His great acts of redemption with songs and prayers of thanks. If Moses and Jonah responded to God’s salvation in this way, how much more should His new covenant people respond to the even greater salvation given in His Son, Jesus Christ! A distinguishing mark of God’s people must always be an overfow of gratitude to the Lord, yet how often do I find in my own life a dullness to God’s salvation and a heart of discontentment! Lord, give me a thankful heart!

Sounds like that was a great sermon, Jerry; I wish I could have heard it! Hopefully I’ll be able to make it up to Meeker before too long and hear you. I’d love that. Thanks for sharing!

That would be so great. I was just talking to my brother yesterday about coming up to Norman after you get moved in to see you and your family. You are in our prayers!
