The Heart of Worship

Psalm 28:7 says: “The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him and I am helped; therefore my heart exults, and with my song I shall thank Him.” If one asks, “How does one ‘exult’ in God, like the scripture says elsewhere?” or “What is the key to a more exultant worship today?”, the answer is here:

This verse tells us that when David trusted in God, the Lord helped him, and his heart rejoiced in Him as a result. David says he then expressed his joy in a song: “with my song I shall thank Him.” This is not something he “worked up”; it was a natural response of joy for what he had seen God do in his relationship.

The reason why many of us do not exult in the Lord in worship like David did is that we have not seen God work in our lives like he did. We have NOT trusted Him like David did, and as a result we have not been helped by Him either. Therefore there is no real exultation in our hearts or joy in our singing. The “missing ingredient” in worship in many churches today has nothing to do with worship styles or music education. Our worship services will be exuberant when the people singing have a real commitment to trust God, who as a result have testimonies of being helped by Him, and who then express their heartfelt joy to Him in exultant singing. The heart of Christian worship is not “worked up”; it is a genuine response to what God does for us when we entrust our lives to Him.
