Hebrews 12:1 says, “Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” It is instructive to us that the verse calls it: “the sin which SO EASILY entangles us”! The Bible indicates that it is not difficult to become entangled in sin; in fact it tells us here that it is “easy”! You don’t have to go out looking for it — it is coming after you!
And if you are not careful, it will envelope you quickly. God warned Cain in Genesis 4:7, “Sin is crouching at the door, and its desire is for you …”.
— it pops up suddenly on the computer
— it stares at you from the ubiquitous billboards and magazines
— it consumes you when an inflammatory comment is made towards you
— it rises up from within you at the slightest provocation
This verse reminds us that we need not seek sin; it is seeking us — and it is doing that constantly! Therefore we must always be on our guard, making sure that we have the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10+) in place first thing each day. If not, we will soon find out how easily we are entangled!
