Psalm 67:1 says: “God be gracious to us and bless us, and cause His face to shine upon us.” Having God’s face to shine upon us is the ultimate goal; that is the blessing for which we seek: the beatific vision; the very face and glory of God! There are many ways that He may “shine His face upon us” at various times on earth – but they all foreshadow the eternal blessing of the face of His glory in heaven, which is our ultimate hope.
We see this taught throughout scripture:
— In Psalm 17:15 David says: “I shall be satisfied with Your likeness when I awake.”
— Jesus described the ultimate blessing of the purified heart in Matthew 5:9: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”
— The only blessing that I John 3:2 mentions about heaven is that “we shall see Him as He is.”
These verses and many more teach us that the ultimate blessing for the believer will be the opportunity to bask in an eternal vision of the glory of God.
Notice also, this verse teaches us that if His face DOES shine upon us, it will be:
— because He is “GRACIOUS” to us. We certainly do not “deserve” to see His face! The fact that we can is only made possible by His grace to us through Jesus Christ.
— And it will be because He has “BLESSED” us. Seeing His face is indeed the greatest blessing of all!
