An Anchor of the Soul

Hebrews 6:19 says: “This hope we have as an anchor of the soul.” The problem many people have is that there is nothing to “anchor” their lives; they drift wherever they “feel led”, or wherever the prevailing winds of culture blow them. Ephesians 4:14 says “we are no longer to be children tossed here and there by waves, and carried about by every wind of doctrine.” This is exactly the picture of many people’s lives today. They have no “anchor” to steady them, and there can be no peace, and no stability, where there is no anchor for the soul.
But Hebrews says there IS a hope which can “anchor” one’s life.

When the verse says: “This hope”, it is speaking of:
1) Hope in the promises of God. :13-18 of Hebrews 6 speak of God’s promises and how it is impossible for Him to lie. We can trust His word as an anchor for our souls.
2) Hope specifically in The Lord Jesus Himself and what He has done for us. :20 says that “Jesus has entered as a forerunner” … “within the veil” into the very presence of God in heaven for us. As the old hymn says: “Our anchor holds within the veil; on Christ the solid rock I stand”!

The hope we have in the word of God, and specifically in the ministry of Jesus for us, serves as an “anchor” for our souls, which keeps us from drifting away to dangerous places. It gives a stability to our lives which those who do not have this hope sorely lack. Why are some people more stable than others? Why do they not drift aimlessly in life? It is not because they are so steady in and of themselves; it is because they have found “an anchor of the soul” in Jesus Christ and in His word!
