The Counsel of the Word

Psalm 119:24 says: “Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors.” In Hebrew, “they are my counselors” is literally: “the men of my counsel.” What a picture God has given us here: that those who testify to us about their experiences with God through the word of God are in a very real sense “counseling” us and giving us insight and direction! We may seek counsel from mature Christians around us to help guide us in our decisions — and that is wise and good — but we should remember that we have the ultimate set of counselors in the word of God: Moses, King David, the Apostle Paul — and yes, even the Lord Jesus Himself — available to give us input through the testimonies of scripture.

Some years ago, a survey asked: if you could have lunch with any one person from history, who would that be? The #1 answer was Jesus Christ. Perhaps that response was predictable: people would want His presence, His counsel, His wisdom and input for their lives. Blessedly, we CAN have all of those very things, as we meet with Him through His word! That is why God’s word should be our “delight”, for it is there that we find all the counsel we need — even from the Wonderful Counselor Himself!
