Psalm 4:6 says: “Many are saying, ‘Who will show us any good?’ Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD.” Where is good to be found? The Psalm says, this is what everyone is asking: what good is there in this world? Its answer is that the greatest good is found in “the light of Your countenance.”
In Hebrew this is literally, “the light of Your face, YHWH”! The single greatest good there is to be found, is in the face of the Lord. Psalm 16:11 tells us: “In Your presence is fullness of joy; in your right hand there are pleasures forever.” It is no accident that I John 3:2 tells us that the Christian hope is to “see Him as He is”, for that is where eternal glory and joy are to be found. Psalm 17:15 tells us “As for me, I shall behold Your face in righteousness. I will be satisfied with Your likeness when I awake.”
The great blessing of eternity will not be found in “streets of gold” or “pearly gates” — but in the endless glories of the face of the Lord. And our greatest good even today, is to get a glimpse of His glory, by faith, as we magnify Him in song, and “see” His glories by faith in His word. And one day, we will eternally behold the ultimate “good” in heaven, when He lifts up the light of His countenance upon us forever!
