“Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.” (John 6:45)
Many people who think they “like” Jesus today probably have no idea about some of the outrageous, exclusive things He actually said. Here in :45 we find yet another of these statements. Many of us are familiar with John 14:6, where Jesus claims that He is only way to God: “No one comes to the Father except through Me.” But that statement is not a “one-off” or an outlier. Here in John 6 we find that same basic sentiment: “Everyone who has heard and learned from the Father, comes to Me.”
We should not miss what Jesus is saying here: He says that “EVERYONE” who has heard or learned from God, comes to HIM. So if you have really heard from God, you are not going to follow anyone else: not Mohammed, Buddah, anyone else, but to Him only. He is very clear: those who have heard from God, come to Him. Consequently, those who have NOT come to Him, have NOT heard from God — no matter what they may assert.
To the postmodern mind this would be yet another example of an “outrageous” and “exclusive” statement by Jesus. Outrageous, that is, unless it were true — which genuine followers of Jesus in fact follow Him by asserting. It does make you wonder whether those who say they “like” Jesus today have ever really read what He has said!
