The Little Condo on the Prairie (4-28-14)

I’ve been busy preaching every Sunday and leading Bible Study on Wednesday nights — basically working a full-time schedule — for which I am very grateful! But one “side effect” is that I have not kept up my “Little Condo” articles with “news” about our family’s antics. So here’s a “catch-up” article with a few stories and conversations from the past couple of months around our place:

LAMEST VALENTINE CONTEST
Michael to Paul, as he was heading out of the house: “You’re going to a movie alone on Valentine’s night? That’s lame.”
Paul: “That’s coming from the guy who’s staying home and watching HGTV with his parents?”

BAD HAIR (EVERY)DAY!
We love Skyping with Libby & Corley Jane — and get a kick out of her different “hairstyles.” This one doesn’t need much explanation:

To be fair, here’s a better picture of these two beauties in the snow:

THE TENNIS LESSON
Since the weather has turned better, Paul & I have been out to play tennis a few times. One particular evening, Michael also came along. At one point after I hit 3 successive serves into the net, Michael suggests: “Here, Dad, like this …” He tossed the ball up, swung at it with his racket and MISSED — and the ball came down and hit him right in the face! Needless to say we all had a laughter break! πŸ™‚

TECHNOLOGY
Michael, watching Paul tinker with his new smart phone: “So what makes the 5s better than the 5?”
Paul: “It’s newer.”

TEST OF SERVICE?
Cheryl woke up one day with a bad catch in her back. After got up, she was stretched out on the couch, in quite a bit of pain. Wanting to help, I said: “Is there anything I can get you?”
“Not right now,” Cheryl responded. “I’m gonna wait till you’re sitting comfortably.”

ALWAYS THINKING OF OTHERS
Later that day, Cheryl lamented: “My back is killing me; I have messed it up somehow.”
Michael: “Listen, Mom, don’t worry about Algebra today; you just rest.”
What a thoughtful son πŸ™‚

WHAT’S THAT FOOD?
Cheryl & I went to our favorite Indian restaurant, “A Taste of India” in Norman, for lunch the other day. Our favorite is the Chicken Tikka Masala (they call it Butter — or actually “budder” πŸ™‚ Chicken on the buffet there) but I tried a couple of other things on the buffet too. Spearing an unidentified “thing”, I said to Cheryl: “I’m not sure what this bite is.”
“Well?” Cheryl said, after I had bitten into it.
“I’m still not sure …”

CREATION QUERIES
Michael: “I wonder how Adam came up with names for the animals when there wasn’t any history yet. How would he name them? Did he just say, ‘I think I’ll call him “Bob”‘?” After a few moments he added: “I guess that’s how they ended up with names like ‘Mahalalel’ ….”.

THE SYLLOGISM
My ears perked up when I heard Cheryl teaching Michael about syllogisms from the Saxon Algebra II book. Unlike most of what they discuss regarding math, I knew about syllogisms: “Hey, that’s right out of my J.I. Packer ‘Lectures on the Puritans.’ You reason from a major premise to a minor premise, to a conclusion. For example, the major premise could be, ‘Whoever believes in Christ will go to heaven.’ The minor premise is, ‘I believe in Christ.’ The conclusion, therefore, is: ‘I will go to heaven.'”
Cheryl: “That’s good; it goes right with what this book says. That will help us. Now, for the example from the book: ‘All chickens …'”.
Michael quickly answered: “Go to heaven!”

CHURCH NAMES
Taking Michael to one of his friends’ house for an airsoft “battle”, I asked him if this friend went to Bethel Baptist. “No,” he said, “He goes to one of those ‘one name’ churches”.
“You mean like ‘Journey’ or ‘Conglomeration’?” I asked.
He looked at me: “Is ‘Conglomeration’ really a church name?!”
“Not that I know of, but it would probably fit some of them!”

ILLNESS ACRONYMS
Cheryl & Michael were going over their Algebra II lesson for the day, and learned a new acronym for a mathematical term regarding congruent triangles (whatever that is;-). The term was “CPCTC”.
Michael responds: “CPCTC. Hopefully that is not something that is going to keep Dad from preaching at his next church!” πŸ˜‰

THE HELPMEET
Cheryl: “Oh, by the way, I declined a friend request on Facebook for you.”
Me: “Really?”
Cheryl: “She was from Lebanon. A model. With no mutual friends.”
Me: “Aw man …”
Cheryl: “You’re welcome. That’s what I’m here for!” πŸ™‚

BETTER THAN AN IGLOO!
Our son David posted this picture of an igloo he & his wife Ashley made during a snowstorm at seminary this winter. “This may be the best thing we have ever made — except for Abigail, of course” — referring to their baby girl, which they are expecting the first part of May! I trust that the next “Little Condo” you read may feature our newest addition. Until then: “the best thing they’ve made except for Abigail”:

Trusting God’s Judgment

Psalm 9:8 says: “And He will judge the world in righteousness; He will execute judgment for the peoples with equity.” This is a needed reminder for many of us. It can be difficult to watch wicked people — or those of God’s people who have compromised His ways — seem to prosper. Is there no justice in the world?

The Face of God

Psalm 9:3 says “When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before You.” In Hebrew the words “before You” are literally, “from Your face.” It is interesting to see in scripture the differing effects that the face of God has on men:

Overflowing With Thanksgiving

In Colossians 2:7 Paul writes that we are to walk in Christ, “having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and strengthened in your faith, just as you were taught, and overflowing with thanksgiving.” It is of note that “overflowing with thanksgiving” is added to this verse:

Wholly Devoted?

In I Kings 8:61 Solomon challenged the people of Israel: “Let your heart therefore be wholly devoted to the Lord our God, to walk in His statutes and to keep His commandments, as this day.” Solomon’s admonition to them was to be “WHOLLY” devoted to YHWH. This is significant. Continue reading

When They Sin

In I Kings 9 Solomon spoke a prayer of dedication for the newly constructed temple in Jerusalem. In :46 he prayed regarding his people: “When they sin against You (for there is no man who does not sin) …”. This is a very wise and understanding prayer. And the word “WHEN” is a key. Solomon knew that it was not a matter of “IF” the people of Israel would sin, but “WHEN.” We are all born sinners by nature, and as long as we live, we are still prone to sin. Thus it is not “if” we will sin, but “WHEN” — even for the best of us.

Promise Breakers

In I Kings 8:25 Solomon prayed: “Now therefore, O LORD, the God of Israel, keep with Your servant David my father that which You have promised him, saying, ‘You shall not lack a man to sit on the throne of Israel, if only your sons take heed to their way to walk before Me as you have walked.'” This was a fine and appropriate prayer which Solomon prayed. God could be counted on to keep His promises to David and the succeeding generations. The problem was, Israel would not.

Sermon: Romans 1:4 “The Meaning of the Resurrection of Jesus” for FBC Paul’s Valley, 4-20-14

When we were serving in Louisiana one of our church members was coaching a kids baseball practice just before Easter one year, and he announced that they weren’t going to have practice or a game that weekend because it was Easter. He thought he would take this opportunity to share with the kids, and he asked them what Easter was about: some of the boys immediately yelled: “Eggs!” The coach said, no, there was something else. “Easter baskets” another boy called out. “No, there is something more special”, he answered. “What is it?” He saw a boy from the church waving his arm, so he figured he would get it right, and he called on him. His answer? “I know — chocolate bunnies!”

We need to make sure that we remember what it is that we are celebrating this weekend: not bunnies or chocolate or eggs, not spring weather, food, or even family, as good as some of those things are. What we are celebrating is the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. We find one of the best references to the Resurrection of Jesus in Romans 1:4, where Paul writes:

:4 “Who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

I almost gave this message the title: “So What?” I had a seminary professor tell us once that we should look at every passage and ask, “so what?” — NOT in an irreverent or sarcastic way, but as a means of asking, “What does this mean to my life? What should I do in response to this?” As we come together this Easter Sunday, we should ask that question: “So What?” So we are marking the resurrection of Jesus from the grave — so what? What is the significance of that? What does it mean to us, and how should we respond? Let’s look together for a few minutes at this passage, and what it tells us about what the resurrection of Jesus from the dead means to us: Continue reading

Because …

In Psalm 9:4 David prays: “For You have maintained my just cause; You have sat on the throne judging righteously.” The word “for” here is an important one. Just as in English, the Hebrew word “qi” is a small word, but it has great significance. It can be translated “for”, or “because.” Like the word “therefore”, it points the reader of this verse back to the ones previous:

In You

In Psalm 9:2 David writes: “I will be glad and exult in You.” It is significant that he does not just say, “I will be glad and rejoice” — but, “I will be glad and rejoice IN YOU.” Those last two words are significant.
