Learning Obedience In Sufferings

Hebrews 5:8 says of Jesus: “Although He was a Son, He learned obedience from the things which He suffered.” “In the days of His flesh” (:7) Jesus suffered many things, “learned obedience” (:8) and became “perfect” (:9). Jesus was, of course, in His nature perfect already, but He had never faced and overcome sufferings and temptations in a physical body before. So there is a sense, the Bible indicates here, in which He “learned obedience” by perfectly facing everything He endured.
There is an application for those of us who are following Christ also.

“Anwoth Is Not Heaven; Preaching Is Not Christ”

I wrote this post 5 months before I became sick, and it looks very prophetic now. I can testify that its lessons have only proven to be more true to me over the trials of the past 18 months.

Sometimes in the process of looking for one treasure, you inadvertently find another.  That happened today, as I was searching through one of my very favorite books, The Letters of Samuel Rutherford.  (Rutherford was the pastor of a church in Anwoth, Scotland, in the 1600’s, but was removed from his pulpit during a time of persecution, and sent into exile.  He continued to minister to his congregation through his letters, which were preserved in this gem of a book.)  I was looking for a specific quote for Sunday morning’s sermon, but my search was continually interrupted by the need to record yet another line from one of Rutherford’s letters that I just felt compelled to save in my illustration file.

In one of his letters, to Lady Kenmure (an aristocratic woman in his congregation who had endured many “losses and crosses”) I found that Rutherford wrote the following: “Anwoth is not heaven; preaching is…

Reproached for Righteousness

In Psalm 69:10-11 David laments: “When I wept in my soul with fasting, it became my reproach. When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them.” One would like to think that when you humble yourself, and do what is right before God, that people would appreciate and applaud it. But as we see here, that is not always the case. David fasted and humbled himself, but people reproached him for it. Continue reading

Coincidence or Providence?

I Samuel 9 describes the circumstances by which God brought Saul to the attention of the prophet Samuel that he might be anointed king. Saul’s father’s donkeys were lost, and Saul and his servant went to find them — which brought them right to the town where Samuel was going to bless a sacrifice. Verse 15 says, “Now a day before Saul’s coming, the Lord had revealed this to Samuel …”.

While I Wait For My God

David wrote in Psalm 69:3 “I am weary with my crying; my throat is parched; my eyes fail while I wait for my God.” We see several things in this verse about David’s response to his trials, which may challenge us in ours:

Don’t Just Look The Part!

I Samuel 9:2, describing Saul, says he was, “A choice and handsome man, and there was not a more handsome person than he among the sons of Israel; from his shoulders and up he was taller than any of the people.” This is pretty much a description of George Washington! He too was handsome, at 6’2″ very tall for his time – he just looked the part of a general and “the father of his country.” But although Saul may have matched his appearance, he was no George Washington in his character, and in his heart for God, which is what is most important. Looking the part was not enough.

Zeal For His House

Psalm 69:9 says: “Zeal for Thy house has consumed me.” This scripture was fulfilled especially in Christ when He cleansed the Temple, but it has application yet for servants of God: we might pray that the zeal of more of God’s people today was for His house. Continue reading

They Will Sing Praises

Psalm 66:4 declares: “All the earth will worship You, and will sing praises to You; they will sing praises to Your name.” How will “all the earth” worship God; what will they do? “They will sing praises to Your name.”

When They Refuse To Listen

When Samuel tried to dissuade Israel from asking for a king, I Samuel 8:19 says: “Nevertheless, the people refused to listen to the voice of Samuel, and they said, ‘No, but there shall be a king over us.’” Samuel had done his best to explain to them all of the drawbacks of having a king (:10-18) but the people would not listen. They were living out a sad situation that many of us have seen as well: when someone is dead set on an unwise course, there is often nothing you can do to talk them out of it.

They Have Not Rejected You, But Me

In I Samuel 8:7, God told the disappointed Samuel: “They have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me.” Many pastors and other Christian workers today need to hear this same word from God and take it to heart.
