In Psalm 119:128 the Psalmist said: “Therefore I esteem right all Thy precepts concerning everything.” This was a strong statement about his commitment to the authority of God’s word in his life. In it he asserted that:
— God’s precepts are “right”
— Not only that, but he specifically says: “ALL” of His precepts are right – (not just some!)
— And His word is right “concerning EVERYTHING.” Contrary to what some assert, the Bible is not just an authority on “religious” topics; it speaks truth in every area of reality it addresses.
— Finally, he said, “Therefore I esteem right” –- his own PERSONAL RESPONSE was to credit scripture with this kind of authority.
It is worthy of note that it is one thing to intellectually assert these things about God’s word; it is another to actually APPLY that in one’s everyday life issues. Many so-called “Biblical conservatives” assert the “inerrancy” of God’s word – but then continually deny that authority when it comes to making daily choices: they refuse to recognize that an area of their life is wrong, even when the Bible specifically condemns it; and they refuse to do the right things, even when the Bible specifically commands it. May God give us the grace to believe the right things about His word — and then, most importantly, to LIVE like we believe it. May we be able to say even of the difficult issues of our lives that the Bible addresses today: “I esteem right all Thy precepts concerning everything.”
