Psalm 149:2 exhorts us as believers: “Let Israel be glad in his Maker; let the sons of Zion rejoice in their King.” The great truth of this verse is that GOD is to be the source of gladness and joy for His people. We are not to find our great joy in that our team won (how our step is little lighter, and our back a little straighter the day after our team wins!) or that the market went up, or because we had a successful week at work or school, or got to spend time with that girl/guy) but in God Himself! The verse says: “IN his Maker”; “IN their King …” — our gladness and joy are to be in God Himself.
In Philippians 4 the Apostle Paul famously commands us: “Rejoice in the Lord always …”. It doesn’t just mean that we are to rejoice “in the ‘sphere’ or perspective of God, but IN GOD HIMSELF! HE is the One we are happy about! And if knowing Him doesn’t give you joy, you either do not know Him, or have allowed sin and disobedience to so cloud your vision of Him that His glories are hidden from you as when the sun is obscured behind dark clouds. The difference maker for the Christian is God Himself. For us it is not just “count your blessings”, but count THE blessing! The only thing a saint of God needs in order to rejoice is His Maker and King!
