A Prayer For Young People (and others!)

Proverbs 2:11-13 contains a great Biblical prayer to pray for younger loved ones, like teenaged & college students, and younger adults: “Discretion will guard you, understanding will watch over you, to deliver you from the way of evil, from the man who speaks perverse things; from those who leave the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness.” Of course, as with all scripture, the context of these verses is also important:

These verses follow the first part of Proverbs 2, which talks about the importance of “treasur(ing) My commandments within you” (:1) and seeking wisdom like one would seek hidden treasure (:4). If a person does this, :5 says, then they will “discern the fear of the LORD, and discover the knowledge of God.” It is in THAT context then, of the person who so treasures the Word and finds God, that the results of :11-13 come — that “discretion will guard you …” etc.

Proverbs 2:11-13 is indeed a great prayer to pray for your younger loved ones — and for those not so young as well! Let us pray for those we care about, that the whole range of what Proverbs 2 teaches would be true for them: that they would seek God’s wisdom in His word, and find HIM — and then be blessed with all the consequent benefits and protection that knowing Him brings.
