“If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14)
Jesus is infinitely above us in rank. Therefore, if He condescends to do something for us lowly human beings, how much more should WE be willing to follow in His steps, and do these things for each other?
This is true in a number of ways:
— It is true regarding humble service. Here in John 13 Jesus washed the disciples’ feet. If HE did that for us, how much more should WE do it for each other?
But it also applies to a number of things as well:
— If He forgives us, then how much more should we forgive each other!
— If He prays for us, then how much more should we pray for each other?
— If He loves us, how much more should we love each other?
— If He the Lord & Master serves us, then how much more should we, who are closer to each other in rank, serve each other?
“If I can do it; you can too.” That is Jesus’ lesson to us here. But thankfully even at that, He doesn’t leave us on our own to do it; but He came inside of us through His Holy Spirit, to help us do for each other, as He has done already for us.
