Prayer For A Backslider

Most of us know someone who had previously had (or seemed to have had) a commitment to the Lord, but who have fallen away from it. Maybe they grew up in church, had godly parents and good spiritual influences in their life, but now they have turned their back on it all. You are praying for them, I trust, but what do you pray?

It is good to pray scriptural prayers, because you can have confidence that you are praying according to God’s will.  Proverbs 14:14 is a good verse to pray for a “backslider.” It says: “The backslider in heart will have his fill of his own ways.”

This is a great scriptural prayer to pray for those who know God’s way, but who have turned aside to “do their own thing”. Pray for them, like this Proverb says, that they “will have their fill of (their) own ways”, that they would tire of their rebellion, and a lifestyle that does not really bring them the joy and satisfaction that they had hoped for. Pray something like: “Lord, may this backslider have his fill of his own ways — and look back to You!”  I am consistently praying that very prayer for some folks who are on my heart — and I hope that today you will commit yourself to do the same.
