The Little Condo on the Prairie (August 7th)

Last week in “the little condo” we had to figure out what to do without our grandbaby in the house to revolve our lives around:

OKLAHOMA STATE BIRD
Cheryl & I ate at a restaurant in Norman one afternoon last week and sat outside at the patio table and chairs since it wasn’t too hot. It was a good thought, but there were so many flies at that particular place that it detracted from the “ambience.” Cheryl observed, “You’d think there wouldn’t be so many flies here in Oklahoma, since the Scissor-tailed Flycatcher is the state bird.”
Me: “They eat flies?”
Cheryl: “The ‘Scissor-tailed FLY CATCHER?!'” Then she launched into one of her inimitable lengthy laughs, against which there is never any rational defense …

Take It To The Lord

I Samuel 8:6 tells us that when the people of Israel asked for a king, it hit Samuel wrong: “the thing was displeasing in his sight.” Then, significantly, it says “And Samuel prayed to the Lord.” And :7 adds: “The Lord said to Samuel … they have not rejected you, but they have rejected Me …”. Samuel then understood that the rebellion of the people was not against him personally, and he should not take it as such. It was ultimately their rebellion against God as King which was the root issue. But Samuel only received this insight because he took the hurt and consternation he felt about what the people were doing, to God in prayer.

We need to make sure that we do the same thing.

“The Gospel of Glory” (II Thessalonians 2:14)

Years ago, when our older kids were very small, I took our son David to Falls Creek with me for the week — he was 3 or 4 years old. We had a great week, as we got to hang out and do a lot of fun things together. One day was particularly fun, as he got an orange soda, had just finished watching our church team play softball, and we were walking down one of the neat trails at Falls Creek, when David looked up at me and asked: “Dad, is this heaven?” Well, of course Falls Creek, even as blessed as it is, is not heaven. It is not even close. But unfortunately, many of us as adults do not have a much better developed idea of what heaven is than my 4-year-old son had. We think of heaven as comprising the best things we have experienced here on earth, or in terms of perfect bodily health or unbounded prosperity — when the great blessing of heaven is something far greater than that: the very glory of God Himself. II Thessalonians 2:14 says:

“It was for this He called you through our gospel, that you may gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

God created each of us to know His glory, and be enthralled and satisfied with it — but we separated ourselves from fellowship with His glory by our sin. But the New Testament teaches us that through faith in Jesus Christ, we “gain the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ” back again. This is “the gospel of glory.” In II Corinthians 4:4 Paul calls the gospel, “the gospel of the glory of Christ” — for the glory of God is what the gospel returns us to. For years, many of us have overlooked, or minimized, scriptural references to the glory of God — or not understood their significance. Let us look at a range of scriptures from both the Old and New Testaments which describe “The Gospel of Glory.” Continue reading

Like All The Nations?

In I Samuel 8:5 the people of Israel told Samuel: “Now appoint a king for us to judge us like all the nations.” A king in and of himself was not not necessarily a bad thing; in fact a godly king of Israel would be a type of the Messiah. But we do read here that Israel’s motivation for wanting a king was a poor one: they wanted a king so that they could be “like all the nations.”

Evaluate Your Worship With Psalm 65

Psalm 65 begins: “There will be silence before Thee, and praise in Zion, O God, and to Thee the vow will be performed.” Notice three very different, but very important elements of worship described in this opening verse:

The Personal Priority of the Word

Psalm 119 is all about the commitment that the Psalmist has to the word of God. In :134-136 we see several examples of the priority that scripture has for him:

The Throne of Grace

Hebrews 4:16 says, “Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we might receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Notice that we are not encouraged to draw near to God’s throne with confidence in order to get the “justice” we deserve, but rather to obtain MERCY!

“Here I Raise Mine Ebenezer”

The second verse of the hymn, “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”, begins, “Here I raise mine Ebenezer” — a reference which escapes some who sing it. The Biblical source for these words is in I Samuel 7. The prophet Samuel had issued a challenge for Israel to repent of the worship of false gods, and return to the Lord with all their hearts. The Bible says they heeded the call to revival, and subsequently defeated the Philistines in battle at Mizpah. So in :12 the Bible says “Then Samuel took a stone and set it between Mizpah and Shen, and named it Ebenzer, saying, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’”

“Just Thunder” — or the Work of God?

I Samuel 7:10 says: “The Lord thundered with a great thunder on that day against the Philistines and confused them, so that they were routed before Israel.”
There are times in scripture when it seems that God does enough of a miracle so that those who will believe in Him will do so – but also leaves just enough room for doubt so that someone who does NOT want to believe may explain it another way if they are so inclined to. This episode is an example of that.

Little Condo on the Prairie (July 30)

FAT LIP
One night last week, we had “Fat Lip” for dinner. Yeah there’s a story behind it … when our son David was little, he would ask Cheryl what we were having for dinner, and without fail, whatever it was, he’d say he didn’t want it. One evening, Cheryl was cooking what most people would call “Beef Stroganoff”, when David came into the kitchen, and with a sneer, asked Cheryl what she was cooking. Tired of his rejection of her dinners, she said, “A fat lip — want some?” He didn’t waver, but immediately went into his routine, whining, “I don’t want ‘fat lip!'” We all laughed. From that hour, Beef Stroganoff has been “Fat Lip” at our house. So … once again the Thomas family had “Fat Lip” for dinner! Continue reading
