“It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves, but you, in these things which now have been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven — things into which angels long to look.” (I Peter 1:12)
A key phrase here is “they were not serving themselves, but you.” This verse is speaking about the Old Testament prophets who were given divine insight into “the sufferings of Christ and the glories to follow” (:11) many years in advance. We can read such passages as Psalm 22 and Isaiah 53, which were written up to 1000 years before the crucifixion of Christ, but which portray the details of His death with amazing accuracy. The Bible tells us in I Peter 1:11 that the men through whom these prophecies came, sought to know to whom these prophecies were referring.
