“The Gospel and Forgiving Others” (Ephesians 4:32 sermon)

(Preached at First Baptist, Pauls Valley, OK 1-18-15)

The great symbol of Christianity is the cross, and for good reason. As we saw last week, the cross of Jesus is the center of Christianity. The basic message of Christianity is that “Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures” — and He died for our sins on the cross. Paul called the gospel “the message of the cross” because the cross is so central to Christianity.

But the cross symbolizes something else as well: it also pictures the two very important kinds of relationships that Christianity impacts in the life of its followers: the vertical bar of the cross points us towards heaven, indicating that it makes us right with God, and the horizontal arm of the cross reminds us that it also impacts our relationships with other people as well.

Last week, we looked at how the gospel saves us and makes us right with God. This morning, we are going to follow that up by looking at how the gospel should affect our horizontal relationships with others as well. A great scripture that addresses this is found at the very end of the fourth chapter of Ephesians, verse 32. This verse is pure gold for Christians of every level; it is one of the first verses we teach our smallest children in Sunday School, and yet it challenges the maturity of the most experienced saint:

“Be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ also has forgiven you.” Continue reading

“Goodness Shall Follow Me”?

The words of Psalm 23:6 are familiar to most of us: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life …” — but they may bring something different to us than many of us might anticipate: Continue reading

When It’s Good To Be “In A Rut”

We often speak of “being in a rut” as a bad thing — and it can be, for sure. But there are also some good “ruts” to be in. Psalm 23:3 speaks of some of them, when it says: “He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.” Continue reading

Salvation Through The Gospel (I Corinthians 15:1-6 sermon)

(Preached at First Baptist, Pauls Valley, OK 1-11-14)

Some New Year’s commitments are better than others! A year ago, I resolved to do something which I had long neglected: I decided to read a verse a day in both the Hebrew and Greek Bibles. I just added it to my regular prayer & Bible reading time in the morning. One year later, I can say that I did it, all year long, and it has been one of the best things I have ever done.
People focus on all kinds of things at the beginning of new year. I read where one person made it their resolution to learn to do better party tricks! But of all the things we could emphasize in the New Year, there is one more important than any other, and that is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As many of us seek to get our lives “right” or “back on track” this year, there is nothing more important to get right than that — getting into physical shape, or getting your finances in order — NOTHING is more important. So this morning I want us to look at I Corinthians 15:1-6, where we find the Apostle Paul writing about the most important thing: the Gospel of Jesus Christ: Continue reading

If I Were In Your Place

One of the striking statements of the book of Job is found in 16:4, where Job tells his “friends”: “I too could speak like you, if I were in your place.” It should cause each of us to ponder the attitudes we have towards the suffering of others. Continue reading

Are You Wearing A Path To God?

While I was running on the grass beside the road the other day, I noticed that a path had been worn down where many of us have walked and run. It would bring to life one of the most important words in Psalm 22:26. The verse says: “The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; those who seek Him will praise the LORD.”

This verse should be both comforting and challenging. Continue reading

Family Gingerbread House Contest Dec. 2014

For the last several years, our family (kids & spouses) has had a Gingerbread House contest during the Christmas season. This year’s is a bit late, since we didn’t get together with the kids until the week after Christmas, at Southeastern Seminary in Wake Forest, North Carolina. (We had all the kids for Thanksgiving, so the Dufrene’s got Dave & Ashley & Abigail for Christmas, an arrangement we are happy with — and we love the Dufrene’s as in-laws; couldn’t ask for better!)

But anyway, even if it’s late, there is a lot of family pride on the line here! So look at the “official” pictures below, and vote via the poll at the end. Thanks for joining us for the contest, and Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all of our dear friends!

The Only One Who Matters

In Job 13:9 the oppressed saint asks his fickle friends a question: “Will it be well when He examines you?” That is a question that should search the hearts of us all. Continue reading

Test Words!

Job 12:11 is a great example of some of the good advice this godly man has to offer us: “Does not the ear test words, as the palate tastes its food?” It SHOULD — but unfortunately that is not always the case! Continue reading

A “Sure-Fire Church Growth Method”

For the last generation, “church growth” has been a primary emphasis in American religion. Methods and process which appeal to the population at large have been employed by many religious practitioners in the hopes of reaching the unreached in our country — not all of which have been faithful to scripture. At some point, Christian leaders and churches, inhabiting a worldly society, need to recognize that not everything which “grows” a church is desirable from a heavenly standpoint. I John 4:5 makes this point: Continue reading
