Sin & the Body of Christ

Colossians 3:8 says: “But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth.” It is interesting that in the Greek text, the word “mouth” is singular, but the word “your” is plural. It appears that the point is it that there is ONE mouth he is referring to here (that of the church) that we should put these things away from, and not merely their individual mouths. It would certainly challenge us to a different level of application of this verse, and to a wider picture of our sin:

“Decisions” & Following

I Kings 19:21 says that when Elijah called Elisha to be his disciple, that Elisha sacrificed the oxen he had been plowing with (demonstrating that he was “all in”, see devotion here) and the text continues: “then he arose and followed Elijah …”

All the preceding surrounding Elisha’s “decision” to follow Elijah would have been superfluous had he not then actually gotten up and followed him!

All In

In I Kings 19, God told the prophet Elijah to anoint Elisha to take his place, and Elijah departed from the Lord and threw his mantle over Elisha, who was plowing with some oxen, calling him to be his disciple. :21 says “So (Elisha) took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.” While Elisha’s actions may seem strange, they actually reveal a lot about the commitment he was making:

The Coming Wrath of God

Colossians 3:6 says, “For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience.” “These things” refers to the sins which :5 mentioned immediately preceding: “immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed.” It can appear to us right now that people commit these with impunity — these sins are rampant in our society, but it doesn’t appear that many are suffering any kind of wrath because of them. But :6 assures us that this is an illusion. God’s wrath IS coming for these sins!

And we learn the following about His wrath from this verse:

A Model of Balance

In I Kings 18:41-46 we see how the prophet Elijah models for us a balanced attitude regarding God’s sovereignty and man’s responsibility:

Three Keys

In I Kings 18 Elijah was very bold with his challenge to the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. God answered by fire — but will He always do such things? In :36 Elijah prays: “Today let it be known that You are God in Israel, and that I am Your servant, and that I have done all these things at Your word.”
:36 shows us three keys to Elijah’s confidence in God’s response here: Continue reading

You’ve Got To Choose

I Kings 18 tells the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel. In :21 Elijah speaks to the people of Israel and says: “How long will you hesitate between two opinions? If YHWH is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” The NASB tells us that “hesitate” is literally “limp on the two divided opinions.”

Not A Problem; An Opportunity

I Kings :17-24 relates the story of Elijah and the death of the widow’s son. This was undoubtedly a test of faith:

— for the woman, certainly. She had submitted to Elijah’s request for food and lodging, in the midst of a drought, and she had stepped out in faith and obedience. Now she was being rewarded with the death of her son?

— for Elijah also. Here he was trying to obey God, and the woman he has so imposed upon loses her son while he is there? It would be a trial of his own faith as well.

But this difficult situation turned out to be an opportunity for God to display His glory. He would raise that boy back up from the dead, and prove His power in an even greater way than Elijah and the widow had seen it before.

So many “problems” are just that: an opportunity for God to display His glory, power, providence, etc. — IF only we will respond to the trial by turning to Him, and waiting for His action.

None of us “want” problems. But perhaps we can train ourselves through experience and by looking through the lens of scripture to see difficulties when they come not just as “problems”, but as opportunities for God to display His glory & power.

Making US Ready!

In Psalm 10:17 David writes, “O LORD, You have heard the desire of the humble; You will strengthen their heart, You will incline Your ear.” Near the end of a Psalm in which he has been entreating God for answers to prayer, he indicates that God HAS indeed heard the prayer of the humble, and will do something about it. But it is interesting to see part of what this entails:

The Key to Fearlessness

In I Kings 17:1 the prophet Elijah first appears on the scene in Israel, and his first message to the king of Israel is of a drought in the land. But notice what Elijah says: “As YHWH, the God of Israel lives, BEFORE WHOM I STAND …”
The key to Elijah’s courageous ministry is that he knew that he stood before God.
